This piece combines two very stark artistic styles. There are very fine, precise details blended with broad, bold colour strokes which between them create a very stunning contrast. The flowing nature of both elements of the image convey a very organic and ethereal tone, which beautifully compliments the use of colour.

The choice of both light and fiery, and dark and cold colours conveys a strong dichotomy of emotions; this plays well on the neutral expression of the subject, and allows us to wonder on the specific thoughts behind the image (rather than us being told).

The spots of light in the darker colours, combined with the warm tones, are reminiscent of many celestial scenes such as Hubble's famous nebulae images; this suits the title well! Are we seeing birth on a cosmic scale? Or is it the death of a ancient star? Does this perhaps hint at a more divine subject matter?
*Who* are we looking at?

All-in-all, the piece in many ways embodies a balance of extremes. As Aristotle believed (and I agree!); balance is the path to excellence, and this is truly an excellent piece of work.
